Client Brief

A family of five in Malvern had outgrown their three-bedroom detached house. Rather than move — they loved the location at the foot of the Malvern Hills — they decided to extend upwards and outwards. The brief was two additional bedrooms and a bigger kitchen-diner.

Design, Planning and Scope of Works

Two-storey rear extension — approximately 55 sqm of new floor area. Traditional strip foundations. Ground floor: large kitchen-diner with utility area and WC. First floor: two bedrooms and an En-suite with separate bath and shower. Natural stone cladding to the ground floor and render above to complement the existing house. Pitched roof with matching clay tiles. Two structural steels at ground floor to create the open-plan layout.

Construction Works

Foundations were dug to 1m depth — a standard strip foundation was sufficient given the ground conditions on this plot. Blockwork walls were built with cavity insulation and the first floor structure installed. The roof was cut and tiled to match the existing house. The Malvern stone cladding to the ground floor was the most time-intensive external element — each stone was individually selected and placed to match the existing stonework. Internal fit-out followed — the kitchen-diner was the final room to be completed.

Challenges and Solutions

Due to the restricted access and the sloping nature of the plot, materials for the rear elevation had to be craned over the existing house to enable the works to proceed. The new stone cladding was sourced through a local stone merchant and installed to create a high-quality natural finish that complements the surrounding area.

Outcome

The extension has been designed to sit comfortably alongside the original property, with brickwork and rooflines chosen to complement the existing house while clearly defining the new addition. The project significantly increased the usable space within the home, providing additional bedrooms and improved living accommodation for the family.
