Client Brief
Stanbrook Abbey — a Grade II listed building near Worcester — required internal refurbishment to several rooms and corridors. All works needed to comply with listed building consent conditions, using heritage-appropriate materials and methods. The challenge was to upgrade the building's functionality while preserving its historic character.
Design, Planning and Scope of Works
Lime plaster repairs to walls and ceilings in key rooms. Redecoration using breathable mineral paints. Careful upgrading of electrical circuits while preserving the fabric. Timber repairs to floors, skirting and architraves using matching species and profiles. Restoration of original ironmongery where possible. Cleaning and conservation of decorative elements.
Construction Works
Every element of the work was carried out by hand using traditional methods. Lime plaster repairs were built up in multiple coats over several days, allowing each layer to cure before the next was applied. Electrical upgrades were routed through existing conduit runs wherever possible to avoid cutting new chases in the historic walls. Timber repairs used reclaimed oak and pitch pine matched to the originals.
Challenges and Solutions
Refurbishment works at Stanbrook Abbey required careful planning due to the building’s historic fabric and operational environment. As a former monastery and Grade II listed property, many of the original structural and architectural elements had to be preserved while upgrading services and internal layouts to meet modern standards. Access restrictions, thick masonry walls, and concealed historic construction meant that much of the work had to be carried out with a cautious, investigative approach. Coordination with the client and other trades was essential to minimise disruption within the occupied building, while ensuring all works respected the heritage character of the property.
