Client Brief

The client wanted to convert an unused stable building into a compact and comfortable one-bedroom home while retaining the character of the original agricultural structure. The aim was to modernise the building internally while preserving the rural barn aesthetic externally.

Design, Planning and Scope of Works

Structural alterations to the existing stable building including new foundations and blockwork walls where required. Construction of a new insulated timber frame structure, installation of new roof coverings, external timber cladding and windows. Internal works included installation of kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living space along with full electrical, plumbing and heating systems.

Construction Works

The project began with stripping out the existing stable structure and preparing the slab and foundations. New blockwork and timber framing were installed to form the new building envelope, followed by insulation and roof construction. External timber cladding was then fitted to create a barn-style appearance, before completing internal works including the kitchen, bathroom, flooring and decoration.

Challenges and Solutions

Working with an existing agricultural structure required careful structural alterations and upgrades to meet residential building standards, including insulation, drainage and services installation while maintaining the proportions and appearance of the original stable building.
